Welcome, this is your chance to meet our Committee.
PRESIDENT: Mr. R. Swindell - Bob
VICE PRESIDENTS: Mrs. Pat Wagstaff & Mrs. Daphne Woodward
Tina has lived with dogs most of her life owning various terrier breeds and a rescued Papillon before being introduced to the true love of her life - Basset Hounds!
This was when the show bug gave her a bite. Wishing to learn more about the breed, she contacted a breed club and soon become heavily involved, joining the BHC of Wales Committee as Treasurer. She is also Ass. Secretary and on two Sub-Committees the Judges Sub Committee and the Sub Committee responsible for putting on Seminars in accordance with the Kennel Club Code of Best Practice. Tina is always happy to share knowledge or advice.
In addition to her canine interests Tina has worked on various committee's over the years serving as a Parish Secretary for over 12 years, organinsing and running part of its social club for over 18 years, gaining valuable and varied experience along the way. Tina also makes time to design and build websites.
Tina has enjoyed travelling the country exhibiting her hounds and judging from Scotland to the south coast and all areas in between. Along with the hounds she has another all consuming hobby - genealogy and has traced her paternal line back to the Normans and her maternal line back to Scotland and the early 16th century. Tina's maternal grandmother born in Castle Street, Newport was the only one of nine children to leave the town, so Tina has a rather large extended family within the Newport area.

CHAIRMAN: Mrs. CM Watkins - Tina
SECRETARY: Mrs. Gill Stewart-May - Gill
Gill first became involved in the world of dogs when she bought her first Old English Sheepdog from Mrs. Woodford [Baucott Blue], called Balthazar. Over the following years a few more OES’s then a couple of Pyrenean Mountain Dogs but Gill always wanted an Irish Wolfhound!!!
Having read lots of books about Wolfhounds it became apparent that small children and Wolfhounds were not a good idea, not because they wouldn’t mix but that whip of a tail can floor a child and do a deal of damage without even trying. So whilst her family was growing they stayed with Old English Sheepdogs.
The last OES was Pepsi such an agreeable chap that they began doing obedience with him, it took him 2 years exactly to submit to Gill's requests for him to retrieve, but it was so much fun trying. Once he got a taste for showing off and, showing how clever he was there was no stopping him and he had quite a collection of winners Rosettes.
Sadly he passed away in April 1990. At this time they began seriously to consider having their long awaited Wolfhound. As a birthday present later that year Gill's late husband bought her, her first Irish Wolfhound, Fitzwilliam. ‘Fitz’ turned out not only to be an excellent show dog but a Thespian to boot. He starred at the Dolman Theatre as King Pelinore’s “Wondrous Beast” in Camelot. From the moment a Wolfhound entered their lives things were never the same, if you go to the house you will see no bowls of fruit, no bijou ornaments. Everything has to be done to accommodate this Giant amongst dogs, walls were taken down in the kitchen, vehicles had to be super sized, stairs and steps had to be barricaded until they reached 12 months of age and ones whole life turned wonderfully upside down. Can you imagine living and working in a kitchen which has 2 single bed mattresses on the floor!!! Unfortunately Gill lost Fitz aged only 5 years with Cancer of the elbow joint. Shortly after he died she was asked by a local breeder to consider adopting Murphy from Lincolnshire as his then mum was going to Oz for 6 months to see if she liked it enough to emigrate with her new husband, luckily for Gill she did and Murphy became her ‘gentle man’ he was the perfect gent, his manners were impeccable but he was very shy and would hide behind Gill if anyone dared to speak to him, he obviously thought that if he couldn’t see them, they couldn’t see him!!!
Sadly, Murphy died just a few weeks ago so now Gill only has one Wolfhound (Quinn) and a rescued, manic Border Collie (Harry), at the moment they are still mourning their beloved Murph.
TREASURER: Mr. Roy Burrows & Members Sec: Mrs. Sue Burrows
Com. Members L to R:
Gerry Wright-Ashworth, and Chris & Eve Jones
Ringcraft Trainers: Mr Glyn Osmond & Mrs Sandy Lipman
Glyn has been involved with the dog world for many, many years. A local man, Glyn and his wife June has owned, bred and exhibited Boxers under the Julynde affix.
Sandy too, is local to the society and has been involved with 'Newport' for many years being a past Treasurer and committee member of the Society. Sandy breeds and shows Great Danes under the Lisvane affix.
Hi! - the "Boss" - aka Tina, asked me to put pen to paper - sorry -printer to paper and introduce ourselves.
Well - pets be honest- we are completely new to the world of dog showing - however, not to dog ownership as we have had West Highland Terriers for many years. After suffering with our Westie who had mega skin problems, we looked for a hardy, non-moulting breed, we found an arictle on Cesky Terriers and the rest is history.
We bought "Fudge" as a pet but were persuaded by other Cesky owners to show him with the result we were in Crufts this year. We do realise that he is primarily a "pet! and although we will continue to show him as long as he enjoys the "buzz", we now also have Murray Mint - a puppy with whom we hope to achieve further success. We are members of the National Cesky Terrier Club and on the Committee of the proposed Welsh Cesky Club, we also belong to the West Midland Terrier Club.
Roy is, as you know Treasurer and I am the committee member who does as she is told! And pays the money into the bank every fortnight. I also appear in the kitchen at shows as I now hold the catering Food Hygiene Certificate allowing the Society to serve food - no compensation offered for upset stomachs!
We are from diverse backgrounds, Roy is still employed in an engineering capacity and I am an "early" retired secondary school teacher. I always found that being a dog owner I had a point of contact with some of my students, which might have not otherwise existed. In the twilight of our years we have found dog showing - which certainly beats Roy's other avowed retirement intent of "clearing out the attic"!

While Eve concentrated on the breeding and showing I was involved with the administrative side of the dog world. For many years I was Vice-Chairman of the South Wales & Mon. Cocker Spaniel Club and was also their show manager. I was also Vice Chairman of the Red and Golden Cocker Spaniel Club and to my knowledge the only Welshman to be on the committee of the London Cocker Spaniel Club.
After retiring from the international coal business I was invited to become Secretary of Newport (Gwent) & District Canine Society following the late Ruby Major. I accepted the position and remained Secretary from 1987 to 1997 when I finally decided to retire but remain a committee member.
Following the sad loss of our President Mrs Margaret Ballinger I was very honoured to become President of the Society.
I have been associated with the world of dogs for over forty years. My wife Eve, who very sadly died in 1995 bred Cocker Spaniels, was an exhibitor and championship show judge.
Our kennel prefix is “TRONGATE”, named after my father’s ship of which he was Captain. The name had a special attraction because my mother married in 1928 and actually went right around the world on her honeymoon on the “TRONGATE”, sailing from Cardiff and eventually returning to Blythe.
We are very grateful to both Glyn and Sandy and owe them a great debt of gratitude for giving up their valuable time to help us, it is very much appreciated!
